A safe space, respect, and guidance: what we do (and what we don’t)
As-salāmu ʿalaykum
We recently welcomed a convert sister and her husband (also a convert) who moved to Houston seeking community and a safe space. In their previous city, they lacked empathy, even for something as basic as wanting to marry, and it affected their practice of Islam. Here, they found a place where they aren’t judged and can grow with respect.
At the same time, we keep addressing a misunderstanding: some assume our Center is a place to “come choose a husband/wife” (especially a “Latino/Latina”), as if we were a matchmaking service. We are not. We do not provide that service. Our Center exists to worship Allah according to the Prophet’s ﷺ example and to ensure that everyone feels safe, respected, and honored.
Are we against intercultural marriages?
No. We’ve celebrated marriages between people from different cultures. What we do emphasize is the sanctity of marriage and a proper process: Wali when applicable, good conduct, and sincere intention to learn responsibilities and meet families—no shortcuts or pressure.
How we keep serving (with your help):
Educate the community on the Islamic approach to marriage (respect, Wali, responsibilities).
Accompany converts and families so they feel safe at the Center.
Protect the character of the Center as a place of worship, learning, and honor for everyone.
